On Saturday September 16, 2017 a large Flag flew between two fire trucks as the backdrop for the Galloway Veteran’s Advisory Boards 17th annual Salute to Veterans Ceremony and BBQ held at the Glen by the Bay Veterans Memorial Park. Over 200 plus veterans and their families gathered to remember and honor those that served and continue to serve. Tim Meadows, Township Councilman, Veteran, and member of the Veteran’s Advisory Board guided everyone through the program of heart felt stories by guest speakers, music from the Galloway Township Middle School Choir and prayers from Paster Walker from the Highland Community Church. In the past this event was free to all veterans and a small fee to their guests. “This year we were able to provide a free BBQ Buffet to all in attendance and hope to continue to do this in the future” Tim Meadows said. A beautiful speech given by Mayor Don Purdy about a local Veteran and Teacher, Mr. Evans, who recently passed lead to the members of Galloway’s Official Military Honor Guard “Last Salute” made up of VFW Post 9462 Honor Guard and Marine Corps Veterans Direct Action Team to render military honors in his name. Sergeant at Arms Chuck Knutson spoke to the crowd about the prayer box and had Mr. Evans daughter, Erin Evans Shellnie, place her fathers prayer card inside. The Deputy Mayor Tony Coppola fired the “Jaime Lee” for one volley, Last Salutes memorial bell rang 3 times, VFW Post 9462 Honor Guard fired their rifles for 3 volleys as Sergeant Chuck Knutson and Corporal Jaime Knutson presented the flag while taps was played by Heather Berchtold. The crowd was silent as they folded the flag and walked over to Erin Evans Shellnie and presented her with a flag for her father’s service. This moving moment was felt by all.
