Financial Advisor Speaks to Absegami FBLA Students About Career Opportunities

Joseph Karlsen, Financial Advisor and Managing Director of Compass Financial, an Ameriprise Financial franchise, spoke with Absegami HS Future Business Leader of America (FBLA) students about his 24 year career path and how it took some unexpected turns during a recent meeting. From his early days “cold calling” customers, he drew from the experience of having to “make a sale” into building successful relationships with customers. He explained how he entered the banking industry and partnered with the staff at local branches to start to get to know potential
clients and determine their needs rather than focus solely on making a sale. He went on to explain how compensation worked for an employee paid on commission in contrast to one who was paid a salary.
FBLA students asked questions such as “what motivated you to leave your previous job and start your own business?” Mr. Karlsen responded with the benefits of “being your own boss” but added that starting your own business was not without risks. At the conclusion of the presentation and discussion, Mr. Karlsen fielded questions from FBLA members with individual questions, congratulated all of them on being part of a great business organization that will help them get started with their college and career planning, and encouraged them to pursue their interests as future career opportunities.
