For those of you that have not seen the military trucks at the Magnus Mud Run giving children rides, we thought we should let the community know that the Galloway Patriot has purchased some military vehicles to assist the township in the event of an emergency.
After Hurricane Sandy it became evident that the National Guard and government agencies were overwhelmed by the number of people needing assistance. Local townships like Ocean City and Brigantine have begun acquiring military vehicles like the 5 ton troop carrier trucks the National Guard used most recently in the Colorado floods to augment their emergency management programs.
These enormous trucks have the ability to go through deep water and snow as well as carry people out and supplies in. Our 5 ton even has a huge winch to recover other emergency vehicles that become stuck or move very heavy debris.
While the trucks are extremely useful in an emergency, they represent a very large financial burden to the townships which own them. They are expensive to register and insure. They are maintenance intensive and it can cost thousands just to replace a tire.
While the other townships chose to accept those costs and acquire the trucks we, the Knutson family, owners of the Galloway Patriot, decided to purchase the trucks and cover all the associated costs. This seems to be the best way for our town to have access to these powerful military vehicles without Galloway residents being burdened with the costs associated with ownership.
You will see the truck around town at community events and charity events like the recent food bank food drive golf tournament. If you have a charity event that you would like us to bring the truck too, let us know.
