J.R. Martinez, motivational speaker, war hero and champion of the 2011 edition of the hit television reality series “Dancing with the Stars” is coming to The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey.
Martinez, whose story of bravery and courage following serious wounds suffered in Iraq captivated the nation, will make a presentation and answer questions. The event is set for 4:30 p.m. Thursday February 16, 2012 in Stockton’s Performing Arts Center (M-Wing on the main campus) in Galloway.
The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are required, however, and must be picked up at the Performing Arts Center box office between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
When Martinez was 19 years old he was serving as a driver for the U.S. Army in Iraq when his Humvee hit a land mine. The passengers were ejected and escaped serious injury, but Martinez was trapped in the vehicle and seriously burned over 40 percent of his body. He has since undergone numerous surgeries. Always maintaining a positive outlook, Martinez’ story was presented to the nation during the “Dancing with the Stars” program and picked up by the national media. He has a successful new career as a much sought-after speaker.
His appearance at Stockton is sponsored by the College’s First Year Experience, Office of Veteran Affairs and the Political Engagement Project.
