On February 8 at 5pm the Smithville Inn turned into a sea of red in honor of Atlanticare’s 11th anniversary of the Red Dress/Red Tie Reception which is to raise awareness for heart health. This event ran by Rose McCarthy,RN and her amazing volunteers put together a night of hors d’oeuvres, vendor shopping, a photo booth and a raffle featuring goods and services from local businesses. All event proceeds benefitted the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Centers Heart Heroes. The AtlantiCare Heart Heroes, an AtlantiCare Foundation-funded program, places automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the community on behalf of the Heart Institute at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. AEDs can restore a normal heart rhythm in victims of sudden cardiac arrest. The program began in 2002, spurred by a small group of dedicated AtlantiCare volunteers who were known as the “Heart Heroes.” Since its inception, the program has placed more than 200 AEDs in the community to increase awareness about the importance of prompt care for heart attack. The Heart Heroes Program funds a portion of the AED cost. Community groups and/or organizations provide the remaining funds. Congratulations to the committee and their job well done on another year.
