The 2019 Smithville Freedom Run was a huge success again this year with hundreds of runners and picture perfect weather. The annual 5K run or 1K walk is held in honor of those lost on Sept. 11, 2001 and benefits local first responders as well as Last Salute military funeral honor guard. Last Salute is the official military funeral honor guard of Galloway, Atlantic City and Tuckerton and conducts well over one hundred ceremonies each year at no charge to the families.
The Coppola family has operated Smithville Village for many years and in addition to restoring the village to an amazing colonial destination, they are continually giving back to our community by supporting many charities and organizations. The Smithville Freedom Run is just one of many events which they produce to help the local community.
The annual emcee for the event is Galloway’s mayor, Tony Coppola. The opening ceremony included a memorial tribute performed by Last Salute and VFW Post 9462 of Absecon.
The run began with the firing of Last Salute’s Civil War cannon, the “Jaime Lee”. Check out the great short video below shot by Marine Corps Sgt. Taylor Speirs.
We would like to thank all the participants and sponsors for making this another successful event.
